Digital electric fence voltmeters read the pulsed high voltage from any energizer and show the result on a display, which makes them the standard tool for fault-finding: walk the line, test at each point, and locate the section where the voltage drops. A lower reading than usual usually means a short from vegetation, a broken insulator or a poor earth.
