This 1.6mm galvanized high-tensile wire is currently KSh 6,200 per 25kg roll of about 1,200m (excluding VAT) — roughly KSh 5 per metre.

High-tensile (HT) wire is made from high-carbon steel that holds its tension over long runs with very little sag. A zinc (galvanized) coating protects it from rust, so it keeps its strength through rain and harsh weather. At 1.6mm, it is the lighter of the two common electric fence wire gauges and is widely used on wall-top security fences.

The 1.6mm wire is lighter, cheaper per metre and easier to work, making it ideal for wall-top fences on homes and businesses. The 2.5mm HT wire (50kg roll) is stronger and has lower electrical resistance, so it suits free-standing fences, long farm runs and corners carrying heavy tension. For very long fences, aluminium fence wire conducts even better.

Multiply the fence length by the number of lines. A 100m wall-top fence with 6 lines needs about 600m — half a roll. Add extra for joints, corners and gate crossings. Our electric fence cost calculator works this out for you.

Run the wire through W posts or insulators, anchor it at the ends with strainer insulators, and tension it evenly. Join wires with proper joint clamps rather than twisting.

Buy 1.6mm galvanized HT wire from Patsec Security Store at Accra Road, White Angle House, first floor, shop 76, Nairobi.
